NGC 1809 (also ESO 56-48, IRAS05023-6937, PGC 16599) is a magnitude +12.5 spiral galaxy located 59.68 million light years away in the constellation Dorado.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town, on the 23rd December 1834.
