NGC 257 (also UGC 493, CGCG 410-6, MCG +01-03-003, IRAS 00454 +0801 and PGC 2818) is a magnitude +12.7 near face-on spiral galaxy located 247 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 29th December 1790.
