They noted an isolated mass lying close by and named it 'Heat Shield Rock'. On January 19, 2005 Opportunity sent images and analyses of the rock to the teams back on Earth giving them their first view of a genuine iron meteorite lying on Mars.

On January 19, 2005 Opportunity rover sent images and analyses of the rock

Heat Shield Rock is a basketball-sized iron-nickel meteorite found on Mars by the Mars rover Opportunity in January 2005. The meteorite was formally named Meridiani Planum meteorite by the Meteoritical Society in October, 2005.
