NGC 2272 (also ESO 490-33, MCG -5-16-17 and PGC 19466) is a magnitude +11.5 elliptical galaxy located 98 million light-years away in the constellation Canis Major.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 Inch) reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town, on the 20th January 1835.
