NGC 2822 (also ESO 61-4, IRAS09132-6926 and PGC 26026) is a magnitude +10.6 lenticular spiral galaxy located 76 million light-years away in the constellation Carina. Observation of the galaxy is made very difficult by the presence of the bright magnitude +1.68 star beta Carinae, Miaplacidus, which is only 5' away.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town, on the 29th January 1835.
