NGC 2204 (also OCL 572 Cr 88, Mel 44 and ESO 556-SC7) is a magnitude +8.6 open cluster located 8,575 light-years away in the constellation Canis Major.
The cluster was first discovered by astronomer Caroline Herschel, using a 10.67 cm (4.2 inch) newtonian reflector, at Datchet, Berkshire, on the 26th February 1783. The object was rediscovered by German astronomer William Herschel on the 6th February 1785.
