NGC 4509 (also IRAS 12306+3222, MCG 5-30-18, UGC 7704 and PGC 41660) is a magnitude +13.4 irregular galaxy located 43 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. In the sky it can be found roughly 34' north of the magnitude +2.6 galaxy UGC 7698.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 11th March 1828.
