NGC 5984 (also IRAS 15405+1423, MCG 2-40-11, UGC 9987 and PGC 55853) is a magnitude +12.6 spiral galaxy located 51 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 19th March 1787.
