NGC 5980 (also IRAS 15391+1556, MCG 3-40-26, UGC 9974 and PGC 55800) is a magnitude +12.7 spiral galaxy located 188 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 19th March 1787.
