NGC 2742 (also NGC 2816, IRAS 09036+6040, MCG 10-13-57, UGC 4779 and PGC 25640) is a magnitude +11.4 spiral galaxy located 59 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 19th March 1790. The galaxy was rediscovered by John Herschel in March 1832 and relisted as NGC 2816.
