NGC 5042 (also ESO 508-31, IRAS 13127-2343, MCG -4-31-43, UGCA 340 and PGC 46126) is a magnitude +11.8 spiral galaxy located 64 million light-years away in the constellation Hydra.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflector at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town, on the 25th March 1836.
