The magnitude +12.5 Type Ia Supernova 1957b was the first extragalactic supernova discovered by Italian astronomer Giuliano Romano on May 18,1957, from his private observatory located in Treviso. The supernova was located about 47" North and 8" West of the host galaxy NGC 4374 (Messier 84). The supernova was recorded a month earlier in a pre-discovery image was taken at Mt. Palomar. The object was followed by the Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago during the following days.
