NGC 4948 (also IC 4156, MCG -1-33-79 and PGC 45224) is a magnitude +13.2 barred spiral galaxy located 52 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.
The galaxy was discovered by American astronomer Lewis A. Swift using a 40.6 cm (16 inch) Alvan Clark and Sons refractor at the Warner Observatory, East Avenue, Rochester, New York, on the 25th May 1887. The galaxy may have been rediscovered by DeLisle Stewart in July 1899 and relisted as IC 4156.
