NGC 6440 (also ESO 589-SC8 and GCL 77) is a magnitude +9.3 globular cluster located 27,700 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.
The cluster was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 28th May 1786.
