NGC 5822 (also ESO 176-SC9, Melotte 130, Collinder 289 and OCL 937) is a magnitude +6.5 open star cluster located 2,990 light-years away on outermost edge of the Sagittarius Arm in the constellation Lupus. The cluster can be found two degrees SSW of Zeta Lupi
The cluster was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at the Cape of Good Hope on the 3rd July 1836. John Herschel described it as a large star cluster with components from magnitude +9.0
