NGC 7540 (also PGC 70788) is a magnitude +14.7 elliptical galaxy located 353 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. 

The galaxy is near to the magnitude +15.5 compact galaxy NGC 7540B.

The galaxy was discovered by German astronomer Albert Marth using a 121.92 cm (48 inch) reflector at William Lassell's Tigné Point observatory in Sliema, Malta on the 3rd November 1864.
