NGC 3831 (also MCG -2-30-23 and PGC 36417) is a magnitude +12.7 Seyfert spiral galaxy located 245 million light-years away in the constellation Crater. NGC 3831 is likely associated with two smaller galaxies; PGC 36416 and PGC 36393.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at Windsor Road in Slough, Berkshire, on the 9th March 1828.
