A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket in a 421 vehicle configuration, is still on schedule to launch the geostationary mobile communications satellite for ICO Global Communications North America, at 20:12-21:12 GMT , 14th April, 2008, from Cape Canaveral. The 27 foot tall ICO G-1 satellite is to be located at 92.85 degrees west, and will provide continuous service coverage for north America, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The ICO G1 satellite features a 12-meter mesh S-band reflector, and weighs in at 6,634 kg, which will make it the heaviest satellite launched aboard an Atlas V booster. "This is a vitally important launch to ICO and we're proud to have been selected as the launch services partner. This launch also will demonstrate the flexibility of the Atlas program that can be applied to the commercial market as we continue to seek one to two commercial customers per year" - David Markham, president of Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services. ICO North America (ICO) today announced that it has signed an agreement to launch its geostationary satellite on an Atlas V rocket provided by International Launch Services (ILS). The Atlas V is manufactured by Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT), which is a partner in the ILS joint venture. ICO's satellite launch, scheduled for a period beginning May 31, 2007, will be performed from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida using the Atlas V-421. "We are extremely pleased to place our next-generation Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) satellite on top of the world's most dependable launch vehicle. We chose ILS for its commitment to meet our scheduling needs, and Atlas V because of its superior track record for successful missions" - Tim Bryan, chief executive officer of ICO North America. ICO North America's Hybrid Satellite/Terrestrial MSS system is scheduled to be operational in July of 2007. ICO's satellite is being built by Space Systems/Loral (Loral). The Space Systems/Loral-built satellite, to be located in geostationary orbit, will provide mobile phone and data services for North America. ICO originally planned to provide such services globally with a constellation of satellites in medium Earth orbit and launched two of the planned 12 satellites (one unsuccessfully); the venture ran into financial problems and entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, emerging as a restructured company focused on the North American market using a single GEO satellite. __________________
