IC 289 (also IC 289, PK 138+02.1, PN G138.8+02.8, IRAS 03062+6107, 2MASS J03101930+6119009) is a magnitude +12.3 planetary nebula located 4200 light-year away in the constellation Cassiopeia. It lies just to the south to the 10th magnitude star TYC 4049-1189-1. The central star is at magnitude +15.9
The planetary nebula was discovered by American astronomer Lewis Swift using a 40.6 cm (16 inch) Alvan Clark and Sons refractor at the Warner Observatory, East Avenue, Rochester, New York, on the 2nd September 1888.
N.J. Martin described IC 289 as "A nice, faint round planet like planetary nebula. The uniform oval disc shows some irregularity in brightness but is not obviously brighter at the edge." Read more
