NGC 2022 (also HD 37882, GC 1225, IRAS 05393+0903, PN G196.6-10.9, and PK 196-10 1) is a magnitude +12.8 planetary nebula located about 7,000 light-years away in the constellation Orion. Its central class O8V star is HD 37882 with a magnitude of +7.2 In an 8-inch telescope and dark skies it appears as a small greyish patch of light. Although not very bright, it is still easy to spot it in the eyepiece.
NGC 2022 was discovered by the German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Clayhall Farm House in Old Windsor, on the 28th December 1785.
