NGC 1701 (also ESO 422-11, MCG -05-12-010, IRAS 4539-2957 and PGC 16352) is a magnitude +12.8 spiral galaxy located 266 ±19 million light-years away in the constellation Caelum. The galaxy is close to the magnitude +10.66 star TYC 6472-1456-1
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town on the 6th November 1834.
