NGC 4993 (also NGC 4994, ESO 508-18, MCG -4-31-39 and PGC 45657) is a magnitude +12.4 elliptical galaxy (E-SB0, transition from elliptic to lenticular) located 133.7 ±10 million lightyears away in the constellation Hydra.

The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 26th March 1789.
The galaxy was rediscovered by John Herschel on the 25th March 1836 and relisted as NGC 4994.

In August 2017, astronomers reported that the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A, of the sort conjectured to be emitted in the collision of two neutron stars, was detected in this galaxy.
