NGC 4993 (also NGC 4994, ESO 508-18, MCG -4-31-39 and PGC 45657) is a magnitude +12.4 elliptical galaxy (E-SB0, transition from elliptic to lenticular) located 133.7 ±10 million lightyears away in the constellation Hydra.

The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 26th March 1789.
The galaxy was rediscovered by John Herschel on the 25th March 1836 and relisted as NGC 4994.
