Several people were feared dead on Monday after a powerful earthquake in the South Pacific sent a tsunami wave into the Solomon Islands.
The USGS issued a bulletin after 23:00 GMT Sunday, more than two hours after the quake, with tsunami warnings in effect for the Solomons, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, north-eastern Australia, Tuvalu, Kiribati and Fiji. A tsunami watch was in effect for New Zealand and Kermadec Island. The USGS was estimating the quakes magnitude at 8.1.
A tsunami has swept ashore in the Solomon Islands following a strong undersea earthquake in the South Pacific Ocean, police said. A police spokesman told the AFP news agency there were reports of damage, but not yet of casualties. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also issued warnings for Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea, as well as some smaller Pacific islands.

It occurred at a Depth of 70.6 km , 210 km South of Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands.
