When Darwin's finches diverged from their common ancestor, the isolation of their island home allowed many species to arise from one. When their dinosaur ancestors emerged in the Triassic, the island home was the unified landmass Pangea, and the evolution was far more complicated. In the Dec. 11, 2009, issue of Science, a team of palaeontologists introduces the Triassic dinosaur Tawa hallae, an animal that may answer longstanding questions about the earliest years of dinosaur evolution. Researchers unveil a new species of dinosaur from the late triassic - an early relative of T.rex and velociraptor. The 2m-long dinosaur, named Tawa hallae, was found in a "bone bed" on the Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, US. Read more
Sue, whose fossilised remains are a star attraction at the Field Museum in Chicago, was found to have lots of small holes in the big part of her jaw called the mandible. Research on other T. rex fossils showed many of them had similar holes in their jaws, so it wasn't a problem for Sue. And, guess what? These holes were found to be made by a mundane little parasite. We know that because this parasite does exactly the same thing to certain birds, particularly falcons. Falconry records going back to the Middle Ages record this. Sue's dental problems actually predate the falconry records by about 65 million years, but the fossil record is more reliable than the falconry record, and doesn't fade over the years. Read more
70-million-year-old evidence of dinosaur cannibalism found University of Alberta researcher Phil Bell has found 70 million year old evidence of dinosaur cannibalism. The jawbone of what appears to be a Gorgosaurus was found in 1996 in southern Alberta. A technician at the Royal Tyrell Museum found something unusual embedded in the jaw.
Bizarre new horned tyrannosaur from Asia described Now, just a few weeks after tiny, early Raptorex kriegsteini was unveiled, a new wrench has been thrown into the family tree of the tyrannosaurs. The new Alioramus altai - a horned, long-snouted, gracile cousin of Tyrannosaurus rex-shared the same environment with larger, predatory relatives. A paper published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences describes this exceptionally well-preserved fossil, shedding light on a previously poorly understood genus of tyrannosaurs and describing a new suite of adaptations for meat eating.
A fossilised Tyrannosaurus rex, dubbed "Samson", is still looking for a home after bidders failed to meet the minimum price Saturday at a Las Vegas auction.
Was mighty T. rex 'Sue' felled by a lowly parasite? A new study, published yesterday in the online journal Public Library of Science One, provides evidence that 'Sue,' the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex whose fossilised remains are a star attraction of the Field Museum in Chicago, was felled by a lowly parasite that still afflicts modern birds.
Most celebrities hit the Las Vegas circuit a few years past their prime. For "Samson," the journey took a bit longer. The remains of the 66- million-year-old female Tyrannosaurus rex , along with 50 other lots of fossils and dinosaur parts, are being auctioned off on October 3 by Bonhams & Butterfields New York at The Venetian resort in Las Vegas.
T. rex body plan debuted in Raptorex, but 100th the size A 9-foot dinosaur from northeastern China had evolved all the hallmark anatomical features of Tyrannosaurus rex at least 125 million years ago. University of Chicago palaeontologist Paul Sereno and five co-authors describe the newly discovered dinosaur in the Sept. 17 Science Express, advanced online edition of the journal Science.
Palaeontologists said Thursday that they had discovered what amounted to a miniature prototype of Tyrannosaurus rex, complete with the oversize head, powerful jaws, long legs - and, as every schoolchild knows, puny arms - that were hallmarks of the king of the dinosaurs.
