The 1,565-meter tall Mount Bulusan volcano has erupted, spewing ash that has blanketed fields and villages as far as three miles away.
There is a 2.5-mile "permanent danger zone" set up around the Volcano which has produced small eruptions and been showing signs of unrest since March 2006.

"We are keeping an eye on some villages in Juban and Irosin town. An ash explosion can occur there anytime" - Bella Tubianosa from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The unstable Bulusan volcano in the eastern Philippines spewed a column of ash into the air Saturday, showering 11 villages with ash, government scientists said.
Bulusan shot a four-kilometre plume of ash into the air, scattering particles for some six kilometres around the 1,565-meter tall volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a statement.

Bulusan Volcano in the central Philippines exploded before dawn on Sunday, while Taal Volcano near the capital showing obvious signs of unrest, a local radio reported.
Residents of Casiguran town in Sorsogon province, where Bulusan Volcano sits, were surprised after they got a glimpse of the explosion that sent ash up to five kilometres high, radio dzRH reported.

"It's a cruel Easter greeting. It had kept quiet for three weeks, then exploded just like that"  - Edwin Hamor,  Casiguran town Mayor.

Hamor said he has alerted at least five villages in the town south of the volcano to take precautions, including using towels and face masks to protect themselves from the ash fall.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it observed the Bulusan explosion at 5:45 a.m. on Sunday. The volcano authority said that residents within the volcano's four-kilometre permanent danger zone have to move out of the area.
Meanwhile, the Phivolcs also raised the alert against venturing near Taal Volcano in Batangas, some 80 kilometres to the south of Manila.
Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said Taal had been showing "much abnormality" in past days.

"The crater is hot and bubbling. People should not venture near the crater area".

The Philippines sits on a seismically unrest stretch of the Pacific Ocean known as the "Ring of Fire", with a total of 22 active volcanoes in its territory.

Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon province showed new signs of restiveness as it spewed ash anew on Wednesday evening on nearby villages.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Liñgon Hill observatory here reported that after a month of calm the volcano exhibited a minor ash explosion at 10:06 p.m. lasting about 10 minutes.
Ed Laguerta resident volcanologist here said that the ash reached five villages southwest of the volcano in Irosin town, namely Cogon, Monbon, San Benon, Gulang-Gulang and Tinampo.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLS) has warned residents living near the Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon of more ash explosions and be on alert for signs of an imminent eruption.

The warning was issued by PHIVOLCS after the volcano had ejected ash anew, some 1.5 kilometres from its summit at 4:17 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, sending ash fall to the Barangays of Putting Sapa, Sankayon, Bacolod, Caladgao and Buraburan in Juban, and Cogon and Bolos in Irosin.
Last Thursday's explosion is the 4th in a series of ash and steam-driven eruptions since Bulusan Volcano became restive when an earthquake swarm occurred on March 19 this year, the Institute reported in its bulletin.

Ed Laguerta, Phivolcs Bicol resident volcanologist, said that they already advised residents outside the volcano's four kilometre permanent danger zone to be on alert for any possible evacuation once the abnormal condition of Mt. Bulusan worsens.
Laguerta said that more ash explosions may be expected in view of other protracted activity in recent history and generally elevated earthquake monitored from the volcano.
He confirmed that the recent ash explosions had again sent light ash falls in the Barangays of Cogon and Bolos at the volcano's Irosin side.

A light plume of ash rose from the Bulusan Volcano in the Philippines on April 29, 2006.

The Terra satellite captured this image of the volcano at 12:50 p.m. (4:50 UTC) local time, shortly after the ash eruption. A faint white plume snakes westward from the cloud-capped mountain in the centre of the image. The plume rose 1.5 kilometres from the volcano. The ash eruption did not cause any damage, but authorities asked people to avoid the region near the crater.

Mt. Bulusan exploded again at 10:44 a.m. yesterday, spewing a column of ash that reached 1.6-km high into the sky and showering surrounding villages with ash.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said steam inside the volcano ejected the ash.
There were no reports of casualties or damage and no sign of lava from the volcano.
But alert level 1 and the 4-km danger zone remained in effect around the volcano as a precaution to local residents.
The 1,565-meter volcano straddles the towns of Juban, Barcelona, Bulusan and Irosin. It is located 43 km south of this city.
Phivolcs resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said the explosion showered ash on the barangays of Buraburan, Anog, Puting Sapa and Bacolod in Juban and Barangays Cogon and Bolos in Irosin town.
It was the second explosion by Mt. Bulusan this year. It first exploded on March 21.
Prior to March 21, Mt. Bulusan had its last activity in November 1994 up to January 1995, spewing ash that affected some 45,762 residents from the towns of Bulusan, Barcelona, Casiguran, Juban, Irosin and Gubat.
As of press time, Laguerta and his men were still at the site collecting ash samples to be sent to their laboratory for analysis.

Position: 12.767292°N 124.052483°E
Bulusan is classified as a composite volcano and is made up of lava flows and domes. It is flanked by several cones namely: Mt. Homahan, Mt. Binactan, Mt. Batuan, Mt. Juban, Mt. Calaunan, Mt. Tabon-Tabon, Mt. Calungalan and Mt. Jormajan. Beside the active volcano is an old ridge called Sharp Peak which is 1215 m. high and 1.8 km. to the northeast. Between Bulusan and Jormajan is the Natakop lava dome.

"Technically, it was an eruption—although it was an ash explosion since the materials spewed were mostly ash and not pyroclastic ones" - Laguerta, Mayon resident volcanologist based in Legazpi City, told the Inquirer during the March 21 explosion.

He also said that since the materials spewed were only ash and not pyroclastic, there was not much hazard or threat to life at present but only an inconvenience to people.
Mt. Bulusan usually exhibited a “one-shot deal”—meaning, once it exploded, it took days before another activity occurred.
Laguerta also noted fissures on the volcano’s slopes, as manifested by emitting smoke.
