An "alpha" version of  new search engine, Wikia Search,  is scheduled for launch on January 7th, 2008.
Unlike google, the new engine will rank its search results using open-source software.

ChemxSeer, the first public search engine designed specifically for chemical formulae.
The integrated digital library and database can tell the difference between "He" ( helium)  and "He"   referring to a human nine times out of 10, according to the Penn State College of Information Sciences and Technology researchers who created the tool.
