The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, located in the Yiling District of Yichang, in Hubei province, China. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest power station in terms of installed capacity (20,300 MW) but is second to Itaipu Dam with regards to the generation of electricity annually.
The dam body was completed in 2006. Except for a ship lift, the originally planned components of the project were completed on October 30, 2008, when the 26th turbine in the shore plant began commercial operation.

China says flood waters at the Three Gorges Dam will peak within the next 24 hours, after torrential rain further up the Yangtze river over the weekend.
More heavy rain is expected in parts of southern China from now until Thursday.

Yangtze Rivers ancient origins revealed

The Yangtze River in China is 40 million years older than was previously thought, according to new research.
A study of minerals by a team led by Durham University reveals that the Yangtze River began to cut the Three Gorges area around 45 million years ago, making it much older than previously believed.
The Yangtze River, the third-longest river in the world, has played a central role in the development of Chinese culture, and the Three Gorges, which separate the Sichuan Basin in the west from the lowlands of central and eastern China to the east, have particular historical, cultural, and geomorphological significance.

Without the transport pathway created by the Three Gorges, south-western China -- including the rich agricultural area of Sichuan Province, known as China's 'rice bowl' -- would have remained cut off from the rest of the country by the otherwise inaccessible mountains that surround the region.

Title: Quaternary history of the River Yangtze

Supervised by Dr D.R. Bridgland

This project would investigate the ages of Yangtze terraces, with a view to mapping terrace deposits, studying their sedimentology and environmental evidence, and applying dating techniques, such as Useries dating of calcareous cement; OSL dating of quartz grains; aar dating of molluscan fossils. Links with workers conducting these techniques exist, so the PhD student will be involved mainly in mapping, sampling and coordinating the dating programme. Professor Zhongyuan Chen (East China Normal University, Shanghai) would oversee the Chinese end of the project. It would be particularly suitable for a Chinese student, who would be better able to liaise with the authorities and landowners in China. It would be helpful if some of the sediment analyses could be conducted in China, since this would obviate the need to transport bulky samples back to the UK.
Preliminary fieldwork has been conducted in the Middle Yangtze, in the region of the Tigerleaping Gorge, where terrace preservation (upstream and downstream of the gorge) is good and calcareous cemented gravels occur, of potential value for dating. The possibility that a future reservoir scheme will lead to flooding of this reach of the Yangtze means that research of this sort is badly needed.

A landslide has killed one worker and left two missing near China's Three Gorges dam, state media has reported.
The accident happened in Badong County, a hilly area next to the dam's 660km reservoir, where the group were working on a railway tunnel.

It was supposed to be one of the engineering feats of the 20th century. But instead the Three Gorges Dam across the mighty Yangtze River in China may prove to be an environmental catastrophe, officials have said in an unprecedented admission.
For more than a decade Chinese officials have vaunted the worlds biggest hydropower project as the way to end centuries of deadly floods along the Yangtze and as a source of electricity to fuel the countrys economic boom. They ignored critics who cautioned that the dam first proposed nearly a century ago and immortalised in a poem by Mao Zedong was an environmental and ecological disaster waiting to happen.
