The U.S. and France plan to launch a new satellite Friday to study rising sea levels on Earth.
The Jason 2 spacecraft is due to embark on an Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM) to research changes in Earth's oceans and their links to global climate change.
The satellite is slated to launch June 20 at around 3:46 a.m. EDT atop a Delta 2 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

A NASA and French Space Agency (CNES) spacecraft designed to continue a long-term survey of Earth's oceans has arrived at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. , for final launch preparations. The new satellite will study ocean circulation and the effect oceans have on weather, climate and how Earth is responding to global climate change.
The Ocean Surface Topography Mission, called OSTM for short, will be flown on the Jason-2 spacecraft, which was transported on April 24 from its manufacturer, Thales Alenia Space, in Cannes , France , to Toulouse , France . It was loaded onto a Boeing 747 aircraft for its trans-Atlantic journey and after refuelling in Boston , it arrived April 29 at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the French Space Agency (CNES, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) for loading JAXA space environment measurement equipment on the Jason-2 satellite of the CNES.

The signing ceremony took place in Kanazawa, where the 25th International Symposium of Space Technology and Science (ISTS) is being held. JAXA President Keiji Tachikawa and CNES President Yannick D'escatha were at the ceremony starting from 2:30 p.m., Japan Standard Time, today.

The main items agreed to are as follows:
1. JAXA is in charge of developing a Light Particle Telescope (LPT), space environment equipment, and handing it over to CNES at the end of Nov. 2006, and processing the data.
2. CNES is in charge of developing the Jason-2 satellite and other onboard equipment for CNES mission, and operating the satellite.
3. The launch of the Jason-2 is scheduled to be performed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in mid 2008.
