New initiative traces the beginning of species' life on Earth
Beginning this week, scientists and non-scientists now have easy access to information about when living species and their ancestors originated, information that previously was difficult to find or inaccessible. Free access to the information is part of the new Timetree of Life initiative developed by Blair Hedges, a professor of biology at Penn State University, and Sudhir Kumar, a professor of life sciences at Arizona State University. The Timetree of Life project debuted this week with the simultaneous release of a major online resource called "TimeTreeWeb" (www.timetree.org), and a book titled "The Timetree of Life" (Oxford University Press), which is written by a consortium of 105 experts on specific groups of organisms and is edited by Hedges and Kumar. Nobel laureate James D. Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, comments in his foreword to the book, "I look in wonder at The Timetree of Life, at the breadth of life that it covers, and the extraordinary data presented in it."

Visual Astronomy

My name is Sean Welton, and Visual Astronomy is the story of my experiences and advice in amateur astronomy. Founded in December of 2007, Visual Astronomy has grown exponentially and is now a major player in the space blogosphere.Originally, the blog was intended to be a mostly private log of my attempts to "bag" all the Messier deep-sky objects.
Suddenly, the blog started to get popular, however, and I soon found that I had actual subscribers. It was then that I decided to take the blog in a whole new direction, and start writing meaningful posts and advice. I'd like to thank these first subscribers, as they made this blog what it is today. Without them, this would still be a simple log of observations.

There are so many Web sites for astronomy and stargazing. When I Googled the word "stargazing," there were almost two million Web sites available, and when I browsed "astronomy," there were more than 43 million sites. The choices are astronomical.
