NASA Sets Target Date for Ares I-X Rocket's Test NASA is targeting Tuesday, Oct. 27, for the flight test of the Ares I-X rocket, pending successful testing and data verification. Senior managers made the decision after a meeting Monday at NASA Headquarters in Washington. The Oct. 27 target date has been confirmed with the Air Force's Eastern Range. The launch window will extend from 12:00 GMT to 16:00 GMT. There is another launch opportunity on Oct. 28. The date will be finalised at a Flight Test Readiness Review scheduled for Oct. 23 at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Source NASA
Test ignition for 'Moon rocket' The test firing has been completed of a new first-stage rocket motor that could one day help take US astronauts back to the surface of the Moon. The five-segment booster is intended to power the early flight phase of Nasa's proposed Ares 1 launch vehicle - its replacement for the space shuttle. The static test lasting just over two minutes took place at manufacturer ATK's Utah facility.
Rocket-motor scrub 'another day at the office' Promontory » At t-minus 45 seconds the voice over the loudspeaker announced the rocket motor was armed. At t-minus 20 seconds, the test firing of Alliant Techsystem's first stage booster motor designed for NASA's new Ares 1 rocket was put on hold -- and then the bad news came. The rocket motor's 'thrust-control vector' -- the mechanism that moves the nozzle on the rocket motor -- suffered an hydraulic fuel-valve failure, and the test firing was cancelled.
NASA rocket test aborted in Utah A mechanical failure forced a NASA contractor on Thursday to call off the first test firing of the main part of the space agencys powerful new moon rocket. Officials said the test would be rescheduled for no earlier than Tuesday.
Test for Nasa's new rocket motor The first-stage rocket motor that US space agency (Nasa) hopes will launch astronauts in future undergoes its first full-scale test on Thursday. The static firing will take place at a facility owned by manufacturer Alliant Techsystems Inc (ATK) in Utah.
World's Tallest Rocket Readied For Test Flight NASA is readying the world's tallest rocket for rollout at Kennedy Space Centre and officials are confident the Ares I-X will fly no matter what course the Obama Administration charts for the agency. Standing 327 feet tall in NASA's 52-story Vehicle Assembly Building, the super-sized rocket is about 15 stories taller than a NASA space shuttle. It is scheduled to roll out to launch pad 39B on Oct. 26 and then launch five days later.
Nasa assembles Ares test rocket The US space agency has completed the assembly of its Ares I-X rocket ahead of a test flight scheduled for October. The Ares I rocket is a key component of Nasa's next-generation space transportation system.
Nasa will not be able to meet its target of sending humans back to the Moon by 2020, or even dream of landing on Mars, because it is suffering from chronic underfunding, a presidential review panel has warned. The US space agency needs at least another $50 billion (£30 billion) over the next decade if it is to come close to delivering on its vision for retiring the space shuttle, completing construction of the International Space Station and launching ambitious new voyages of discovery.
