An Indian TES Military Surveillance spacecraft that was launched on October 22, 2001 aboard a PSLV Launch Vehicle from the Sriharikota space centre decayed on the 28th August 2006.
A large piece of space junk has fallen on the city of São Félix do Xingu, that is 695 km from Belém. A sphere made of something similar to stainless steel, measuring about 80 centimeters of diameter and approximately a meter high, fell on a farm on the outskirts of the city. The owner found the object last week. A councillor of the city, was out walking when he came across the object. He informed officers of the Amazonian Monitoring Service(Sivam). The officials of the agency confirmed that the object was part of a communication satellite that was probably meant to have been ditched into the sea, but fell onto the country property. According to Sivam, at the speed that the object must have fallen, it could have been a `tragedy` if it had fallen onto the urban area of the city. Where it landed no one was hurt.
The officers collected the satellite and they had taken it for the base in São Félix do Xingu. A identification plate on the object indicates that it was part of an american rocket.
