The first authentic record of gold discovery in Australia was on February 16, 1823, when Surveyor James M'Brian found gold at Fish River, 18 miles from Bathurst, New South Wales. Source
Australian amateur prospector finds massive gold nugget
An amateur prospector in the Australian state of Victoria has astonished experts by unearthing a gold nugget weighing 5.5kg (177 ounces). The unidentified man, using a handheld metal detector, found the nugget on Wednesday, lying 60cm underground near the town of Ballarat. Read more
The world's largest single mass of gold is correctly not a nugget it is a specimen also known as a matrix. However, gold is gold whatever the name tag and an estimated 3,000 ounces of gold makes "THE BEYERS AND HOLTERMANN SPECIMEN" the world's largest single mass of gold. The specimen was discovered on the 19th October, 1872 Read more
Where did all the gold come from? Violent collisions between dense former stars may be why gold, lead, thorium and other heavy elements exist in such abundance. Only hydrogen, helium and lithium were present after the big bang. Ordinary stars then fused elements up to the mass of iron. Anything heavier was created when smaller atoms captured neutrons, some of which then decayed into protons. A slow version of this process might occur in massive stars, but that could only account for about half of the remaining heavy elements. Rapid neutron capture is needed to explain the other half, including gold and lead, says Hans-Thomas Janka at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany. Read more
Ultra high precision analyses of some of the oldest rock samples on Earth by researchers at the University of Bristol provides clear evidence that the planet's accessible reserves of precious metals are the result of abombardment of meteoritesmore than 200 million years after the Earth was formed. The research is published today in Nature. Read more
What is so special about gold, and should we all be investing in it? The largest reservoirs of gold on earth are in the oceans, but the concentration is so weak there is no way to get it out. Space is an even bigger source. In 1999, a spacecraft analysing the Eros asteroid showed it contained more gold than has ever been mined on earth.
A new generation of fortune hunters is seeking riches under the sands of Saudi Arabia. But this time they're searching for gold - the shiny kind, not the black, liquid variety - and potentially even more lucrative metals and minerals.
Miniscule triangular and hexagonal plates of gold less than 20 nanometers thin and identical to those manufactured by humans have been found occurring naturally in salty groundwaters of Western Australia.
According to the China National Gold Group Corporation, Chinese geologists have discovered a large gold deposit at the Na Neng gold mine in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The gold mine was previously estimated to have reserves of 5 metric tons but detailed prospecting has pushed this figure up to 15 metric tons. China's gold reserves are estimated at 15,000-20,000 metric tons.
