Space telescope to create radio 'eye' larger than Earth

A Russian space telescope conceived during the Cold War is set to launch on Monday. When it reaches an orbit that will extend almost as far as the moon, the RadioAstron mission will sync up with radio antennas on the ground, effectively forming the biggest telescope yet built, with a "dish" spanning almost 30 times the Earth's diameter.

Ed ~ The Zenit-2SB rocket with the Spektr R observatory is scheduled to launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 02:31 GMT, 18th July, 2011. It has seemingly no connection with SPECTRE

Launch of Russian observatory to study universe could be postponed

The placement of Russia's Spektr-R astrophysical observatory into orbit, initially set for July, could be postponed because its Zenit rocket is needed to launch the U.S. Intelsat 18 telecommunications satellite.

Another stage of vibro-dynamic tests of the international orbital astrophysical observatory "Spektr-R" was finished successfully.
"Spektr-R" is an astrophysical observatory within "Radioastron" project, which is being developed according to Russian Federal space exploration programme 2006-2015. The unit consists of all-purpose baseline module "Navigator" and space radio telescope.

Russia is to launch a special satellite this year in search for extraterrestrial civilisations in remote galaxies.
The Spektr R (Spectrum-Roentgen) x-ray satellite to be launched later this will carry a 20-metre antenna for the study of galaxies and extraterrestrial civilisations.

"It would be arrogant of us to presume that human beings are the only life in the universe" - Georgy Polishchuk of the Lavochkin Research and Production Enterprise.

Polishchuk, who heads the Moscow-based enterprise, said that Lavochkin was also working on interplanetary missions.
