A major earthquake has hit Kyrgyzstan, killing at least 65 people, officials in the Central Asian nation say. The 6.6-magnitude quake struck at 21:52 local time (15:52 GMT) on Sunday, destroying more than 100 buildings in the southern province of Osh.

According to a spokesman for the Kyrgyz government the earthquake that shook southwestern Kyrgyzstan, near Kyrgyzstan's border with Tajikistan, only caused slight damage and injuring no one.

The earthquake which had its epicentre in the Batken Province, partially destroyed several homes and administrative buildings in the village of Katran, situated 90 kilometres from the provincial capital, as well as surrounding settlements.
