A major earthquake has hit Kyrgyzstan, killing at least 65 people, officials in the Central Asian nation say.
The 6.6-magnitude quake struck at 21:52 local time (15:52 GMT) on Sunday, destroying more than 100 buildings in the southern province of Osh.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck near Sary-Tash in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan on Sunday at 15:52 GMT (9:52 p.m. local time).

A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred at 15:52:50 (UTC) on Sunday, October 05, 2007 in the Kyrgyzstan region, 50 km  NNE of Karakul, at a depth of 35 km.

According to a spokesman for the Kyrgyz government the earthquake that shook southwestern Kyrgyzstan, near Kyrgyzstan's border with Tajikistan, only caused slight damage and injuring no one.

"We can now say with certainty that there are no victims"

The earthquake which had its epicentre in the Batken Province, partially destroyed several homes and administrative buildings in the village of Katran, situated 90 kilometres from the provincial capital, as well as surrounding settlements.
