An idyllic spot turned spaceport

The island housing India's only spaceport from where ISROs historic missions have lifted off over the years, should ideally have been turned into an idyllic holiday spot. Had it happened, the 43,360 acre land with a 50 km long pristine beach, thick green foliage, wild animals and sandwiched between the blue sea and an expansive lake, visited by birds from around the world, would today be swarming with tourists and not scientists and journalists.

ISRO plans launchpad-3 for India's space odyssey 

Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is reportedly trying its best to secure sanction of the Union government to set up a third launching pad for rockets and space craft at spaceport, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

ISRO to build third launchpad at Sriharikota

With plans for 60 missions over the next five years, ISRO will develop a third launchpad at its spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh to meet the growing demand.
The new pad could also be used for launching Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk-III) carrying heavier satellites as also by the reusable launch vehicle, India's own version of a space shuttle.
It would include construction of a new vehicle assembly building, mobile pedestals, umbilical towers, emergency exits, ground escape system, crew ingress and egress systems, safety bunkers, material handling equipment and related electrical systems.

ISRO plans special launch pad at Sriharikotta

The third launch pad planned at ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, is going to be something special.
While it will meet the space agency's needs for the 2015 Human Space Flight Mission, the launch pad is also being designed to accommodate the proposed Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), India's dream space shuttle which is on the designing board, ISRO officials said.

The Indian Space Research Organisation plans to build a third launch pad at its Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota island on India's eastern coast for its proposed 2015 manned flight.
The SDSC's two launch pads already in operation have facilities for solid propellant processing, motor static testing, launch vehicle integration and launch and range operations, including telemetry, tracking and the command network.
