House Democrats and Republicans got into a dispute Monday over a piece of rock. Not just any rock but the Willamette Meteorite, the 16-ton chunk of iron-nickel that was discovered on a West Linn hillside in 1902 and that has been on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York since 1935. At issue was House Joint Resolution 30, a measure "demanding" that the museum return the meteorite "to its home, the State of Oregon." On a party line vote of 30-24, the Democrats succeeded in sending the resolution back to the House Workforce and Economic Development Committee.
After blazing from outer space to land in West Linn thousands of years ago, the Willamette Meteorite still generates excitement today. Fields Bridge Park will soon house an interpretive trail, located almost exactly where the meteorite was found originally. The Ice Age Trail project costs $125,000, and a majority of that is already raised. Donors are now asked to fill in the gap of $6,000.
