Dr. Thomas Kenkmann and graduate student Michael Poelchau from the museum of natural history  at the Humboldt university in Berlin have scientifically documented the meteorite impact, which occurred on 15 September 2007 in Peru near to the  Carancas settlement. The meteorite left a Crater of nearly 15 m  in diameter and about 5 m deep. An enormous pressure wave was released, and earth and rock were hurled over  a distance of  200 m.

Hernán Fuentes, the regional president of Puno, Peru announced that Thursday or Friday a project to conserve the crater left by the meteorite that landed in Carancas on September 15 would begin.
Fuentes told Andina News Agency that the regional government had designed a project with several stages in which the crater would be preserved and turned into a tourist attraction. The first stage is to take approximately 30 days and will focus on preserving the crater itself.

Regional Geology Director for Peru's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET), Hernando Núñez del Prado, stated yesterday that the townspeople of Carancas, Puno, Peru were suffering from "a type of collective psychosis" due to the fact that they had established a 24-hour watch around the crater where the meteorite  had landed.
Núñez explained that the townspeople were treating the crater as a "treasure which had to be protected day and night," explaining that they feared losing fragments of the meteorite.

According to Andina, Peru's government news agency, Peru's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET) reported today that Russian meteorite traffickers were persuading authorities and citizens in Puno, Peru to extract the fallen meteorite for economic gain.

"I've been told that foreigners, with Russian nationalities, have been manipulating the people, telling them that if they don't extract the probable fragments that are in the deep (crater), they will turn to ash and disappear" - The Regional Geology Director for INGEMMET, Hernando Núñez del Prado.

The story sparked debate around the world - with some saying that the blast crater couldn't have been caused by a meteorite impact. Skeptics initially speculated that the villagers came across and went out in search of the fireball and came across a gas explosion. Even though the evidence for a meteorite mounted over the weeks that followed, one expert at NASA told me privately that he was still unconvinced because there was no authoritative analysis of debris from the site.
Now there is: This week, Connolly told me that he had completed his analysis of samples brought back from the site by meteorite hunter Michael Farmer, and that the samples are ordinary chondrites - a class that accounts for about 85 percent of the meteors found on Earth. Connolly said the Peruvian samples represent a relatively common subclass of chondrite, an H4/5.
Different types of chondrites, like the Tagish Lake meteorite that fell to earth in 2000, are highly prized by scientists because they preserve the primitive stuff of the solar system. The Desaguadero Meteorite and its ilk, however, suffer too much heating during their space travels to be valuable in that way, Connolly said.

"Once you start heating them up, as in type H4, H5, H6, then you begin to lose all these signs of protoplanetary processes. It's certainly great science, but it's just not something I'm interested in."
