A blazing fireball plummeting toward Earth was seen over a wide area of Central Oregon, Northern California and Nevada as night fell on Christmas Eve.
Several spotters say they saw it break apart into three fiery streaks of light, but a meteorite hunter says there's little if any chance a blazing "rock from space" might have reached the ground and could be found.

Could it have been Rudolphs nose, gleaming brightly? Or maybe just a meteorite in the making?
All across Central Oregon Monday night, there were reports of a fireball seen streaking to the ground.

Washoe County sheriff's deputies and search and rescue team members on Monday night were scouring an area near Spanish Springs for signs of a meteor that might have fallen to Earth after 5 p.m.
Sgt. Harry Dixon said a caller reported seeing a bright red, blue and yellow light falling from the sky north of Winnemucca Ranch Road about 5:15 p.m. and thought it might be an aircraft.

Officials are trying to determine what people saw streaking across the sky last evening above Spanish Springs north of Reno.

All across Central Oregon last night, there were reports of a fireball seen streaking to the ground.
Keith Clinton, who lives east of Bend says he saw a "large, bright green fireball descend out of the cloudless sky east of Bend."
