Randy McAllister's parents bought him his first telescope 23 years ago so he could see Haleys Comet.
He still has it, but that telescope is rather dwarfed by his current version his childhood viewer is 1/100th the size.
In the early 1990s, the idea of building an observatory started orbiting around in his brain. For years, he structured his life around that plan, from where he bought land to learning to build a house to immersing himself in astronomy, engineering and computer science.

This fall, Lakehead University students are getting out of the classroom and into the heavens.  For the first time, the Department of Physics will help students develop hands-on skills in observational astronomy. The course, taught by Lakehead Engineering professor Dr. Lionel Catalan, and Randy McAllister, President of the Thunder Bay Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, provides students a minimum of four night sessions at the Thunder Bay Astronomical Observatory, and 36 hours of lectures and tutorials in a computer lab.
