Telops wins contract to upgrade imaging quality for Mont-Mégantic telescope

A nearly $535,000 U.S. dollar contract by Laval University was awarded to imaging systems company Telops to upgrade the imaging quality of the Mont-Mégantic Observatory telescope near Sherbrooke, QC. In collaboration with the Laboratory of Experimental Astrophysics, Telops will design and integrate an autonomous control system that will significantly increase the imaging quality of the telescope in experiments requiring prolonged exposure of various astronomical cameras.
The proposed Telops system will correct in real-time the misalignment of the telescope by compensating for imaging deformation due to atmospheric turbulence and thermo-mechanical deformations of the telescope while improving the performance of the precision guide system of the telescope.

Quebec is home to the worlds first Dark Night Sky Reserve

The 1,102-metre summit is home to the Mont Mégantic Observatory, which has the distinction of possessing the most powerful telescope in eastern Canada. It's an observatory that made the news last spring when the federal government imposed budget cuts on it, part of Ottawa's broader retreat from funding basic science research.
But after a public outcry, the cuts were rescinded, and the observatory's focus is back on joining this year's International Year of Astronomy celebrations. More than 135 countries are participating in this 400th-anniversary commemoration of the first recorded telescopic observations of the night sky by Galileo Galilei.

Budget cuts threaten to close a Quebec observatory whose work led to last Autumn's discovery of the first planets ever actually photographed in another solar system.
The Mont-Megantic Observatory has a storied role in developing techniques in astronomy, and is widely considered Canada's best telescope for training astronomers.
But the federal Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), which funds science, is cancelling its $325,000 annual support for the observatory.

Observatory atop Mont Mégantic has a strong attraction for stargazers
Starry skies are a star attraction of this remote corner of Quebec by the Maine woods, far from night sky glow that blots them out in settled areas.
Seizing on the angle, Mégantic region's tourist guide bears a Reach for the Stars slogan on its cover page. A café in the village of Notre Dame des Bois is called La Belle Etoile. Under a Starry Sky is the translated name of a B&B tucked in a forest clearing near Woburn.
