The very bright fireball fell at 19.23 UT (17th May 2005) and lasted for 5 – 10 seconds. Its entry velocity would have been relatively slow. It seems that a smoke trail persisted for 45 minutes afterwards. According to one witness the meteor exploded into small pieces, with the pieces landing beyond the Finnish border, into Russian, by perhaps 100km or more…
An exceptionally bright "fireball" was spotted late on Tuesday slicing through the sky over Finland before exploding over the country's border with Russia, the Finnish Astronomical Association (URSA) said on Wednesday. The phenomenon was witnessed by dozens of people in the eastern part of the country. "Our mathematicians have roughly calculated that the (fireball)began its decent over our eastern border and ended in an explosion over the Russian Karelia region." - Marko Pekkola, URSA newsletter editor.
Closer calculations will be needed to determine the exact route taken by the "fireball", which was probably an incandescent meteorite.
