A magnitude 14.9 supernova, 2009ik, was discovered on the 22nd, August, 2009, by B. Monard in the spiral galaxy NGC 4653 in the constellation Virgo. The supernova is located 2" east and 75" south from the center of the galaxy. As yet the type is unknown.

A supernova was last discovered in the galaxy in 1999 (supernova 1999gk)
