Secrets of Wisconsin meteorite revealed

The Mifflin meteorite created a fireball equivalent to 20 tons of TNT, initiating a scientific quest that revealed the complex history of a rocky body that predates Earths formation. Although the fireball could be seen from Madison, 50 miles away, the meteorite was far smaller than the object that exploded over Siberia.

People can now own a piece of the meteorite that landed in southern Wisconsin last year.

Scientists John Valley and Noriko Kita of the University of Wisconsin Atmospheric and Oceanic Services said the meteorite dates back about 470 million years.
Pieces of the meteorite are currently on display at the UW Geology Museum. People can purchase a piece of the Mifflin meteorite on eBay for about $400.

Mifflin Meteorite finds permanent home in Geology Museum

The meteorite that lit up the skies over southwest Wisconsin this spring has been officially dubbed the "Mifflin Meteorite," and several of its pieces are now part of the permanent collection of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Geology Museum.
Though its dramatic fall did spark a frenzy of activity, no, it wasn't named after the block party.
Instead it is named after Mifflin Township, near the center of the area in southwest Wisconsin showered by the meteorite on Apr. 14, 2010.

The meteor that lit up the sky of southern Wisconsin on April 14 and created an international buzz now has a name.
The Meteoritical Society has aptly named it the Mifflin Meteorite, named after the town on which many of the pieces were found.

Paul Sipiera, of the Planetary Studies Foundation, will be at the Chamber office, 275 W. U.S. Business 151 to answer questions about the meteorite that landed in the Livingston area in April.
It will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays: June 18, July 2, July 16, Aug. 6 and Aug. 20.

When Karl Aston saw a fireball in the sky, his first thought was of chasing it.
The St. Louis research chemist, whose in-laws live in Quincy, hunts for and collects meteorites in his spare time. After a meteorite streaked across the night sky on April 14 as a brilliant fireball visible to the naked eye across the Upper Midwest, Aston travelled to its landing place in rural southwest Wisconsin and found one of the largest discovered chunks of the rock.
