Billions of years before April 14, two asteroids collided somewhere in outer space, sending a rock on a path that ultimately led to Kevin Wasley's farm field. It took much less time to nudge the orbits of meteorite hunters careening to southwestern Wisconsin where their zeal for tiny black rocks from outer space has created quite a sensation and boosted business in nearby communities. A Howard family may have discovered a meteorite from last week's fireball that could be worth thousands. Shea Gorzelanczyk was fascinated after he saw video of the meteor flash that lit up the Midwest skies April 14. Along with his three kids and a metal detector, he stumbled upon his finding just west of Mineral Point on Sunday. Read more
Two Illinois teens and a man from Southwestern Wisconsin believe they've recovered fragments from a meteor that lit up Midwestern skies earlier this week. One rock, claimed to be found within 22 hours of the fall, was picked up by Christopher and Evan Boudreaux of Lake Forest. The 13- and 17-year-old boys drove six hours with their father, a professional collector, to Livingston, Wis. and were given the rock by a farmer. Read more

Scientists at Chicago's Field Museum are examining a rock that might be linked to last week's meteor shower. People across the Midwest reported seeing a giant flash of light in the sky last week and one local man said he thinks he found a piece of a meteor in southern Wisconsin. When Ruben Garcia saw video of the meteorite that streaked across the Wisconsin sky on Wednesday night, it might as well have been the Bat-Signal. The professional meteorite hunter, known to many as Mr. Meteorite, was in his car the next day, driving from his home in Phoenix, bound for Iowa County to look for every chunk of that meteorite he could find.
