Title: A statistical dynamical study of meteorite impactors: a case study based on parameters derived from the Bosumtwi impact event

The study of meteorite craters on Earth provides information about the dynamic evolution of bodies within the Solar System. Bosumtwi crater is a well studied, 10.5 km in diameter, ca. 1.07 Ma old impact structure located in Ghana. The impactor was ~ 1 km in diameter, an ordinary chondrite and struck the Earth with an angle between 30° and 45° from the horizontal. We have used a two phase backward integration to constrain the most probable parent region of the impactor. We find that the most likely source region is a high inclination object from the Middle Main Belt.

Tourist Board to revive attraction to the only natural lake in Ghana

The Ashanti regional office of the Ghana Tourist Board has initiated programmes to increase the attraction of investors and tourists to the only natural inland lake in Ghana.
The Abono Declaration of 1999 identified the Lake Bosomtwe as an eco-tourism zone, but plans to develop the basin have not been carried through successfully.

About an hour's drive south from the bustling city of Kumasi, which is also the royal capital of the Ashanti tribe, is another popular natural attraction, Lake Bosumtwi.
The lake, created by rainfall which filled a meteorite crater, is nestled in between lush, verdant forest-covered mountains and also helps to sustain the surrounding village communities through fishing, boat trips and tours.

The 1.07 million year old impact structure in Ghana has a nearly circular shape with a rim diameter of 11 km north-south and 10 km east-west. It is surrounded by a circular depression and an outer ridge of diameter 20 km. Polymict breccias averaging at least 20 m thick with clasts as much as 5 m long occur on the outer ridge, and the crater rim shows in situ shattered rock. Patches of suevite have been found in the circular depression north and south of the crater.


Location: 06°32'N, 01°25'W

There is geochemical evidence that the meteorite was an iron, and its mass and energy are suggested as about 10^8 tons and 3 × 10^19 joules or 7.3 × 10^3 megatons.
This crater is situated in crystalline bedrocks of the West African Shield and is filled almost entirely by Lake Bosumtwi.
Chemical, isotopic, and age studies demonstrate that the crater is the most probable source for the Ivory Coast tektites, which are found on land in the Ivory Coast region of central Africa and as microtektites in nearby ocean sediments.
