People of Shingpara village in Thakurgaon were astonished to hear the sound of a meteorite falling on 31 January. The village is situated in the north-west district of Bangladesh, 500 km away from the capital city Dhaka.
Villagers thought a fireball dropped on the ground after creating some weird sound as it fell. It made 3.5ft deep impact crater. Residents informed the nearest police station about its dropping with a bang. Police later brought it to the police station for safe keeping.
At the time, the villagers thought it was a mortar shell from the Indian border. To add to the confusion, local goldsmiths claimed the meteorite was a rare and expensive black stone.

Immediate after hearing the news a five-member astronomy group of Anushandhitshu Chokro Science Organisation rushed to the place to investigate the sudden occurrence. After proper observation, the observation team confirmed it as a meteorite. Some information they stated bellow:

Weight: 2.5 K.G.
Height: 12.5 cm
Element: Stony Iron

The Police may either hand the meteorite over to the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission or National Science Museum. The Atomic Energy Commission may investigate the meteorite.

Most meteors disintegrate when entering the Earth's atmosphere, making impacts events (Earth impacts) on the surface is uncommon. About 500 baseball-sized rocks reach the surface each year. Large meteorites may strike the ground with considerable force, leaving behind an impact crater. The kind of crater will depend on the size, composition, degree of fragmentation, and incoming angle of the meteor. The force of collision may cause widespread destruction.

Across the world there are many collectors and organisation, which are collecting meteorite for several purposes. Unfortunately the process of meteorite recording is almost absent in Bangladesh. Although five decades ago there was a department to catalogue falling sky objects.

The suspected meteor is being sent to the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission for testing.
The lead like black material was found 90 cm below the earth in the field of Singpara village in northwestern Thakurgaon district on Tuesday afternoon.

Weighing 2.5 kg the triangular shape material looked like a mortar shell.

Zarina Begum, an eyewitness to the fall of the suspected meteor, said she heard sound like that of a fighter plane. Soon something fell about 91 meters away on the onion field with a big bang.
She raised an alarming cry. People from around rushed to the spot and found smoke oozing out from a hole.
