Merapi Access Shut on Eruption Fear

All routes to Mount Merapi were closed to the public on Friday as the alert status of one of the most active volcanoes in the world was raised to "standby," just one level below a full-blown eruption.
All residents on the slopes of the mountain have been advised to say outside an eight-kilometer radius from the peak following the issuance of the latest alert status on Thursday evening.

Merapi is a natural-born killer. Rising almost 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) over forests and fields, it ranks among the world's most active and dangerous volcanoes. Its very name means "fire mountain." An eruption in 1930 killed more than 1,300; even in less deadly times, plumes drift menacingly from the peak. Some of the surrounding area, warns a local hazards map, is "frequently affected by pyroclastic flows, lava flows, rockfalls, toxic gases and glowing ejected rock fragments." As the volcano's rumbling crescendoed in May 2006, thousands fled the fertile slopes and settled reluctantly into makeshift camps at lower, safer altitudes. Even the resident monkeys descended in droves.

Earthquakes and volcanoes

Like a dark storm cloud on the horizon, an earthquake can be a harbinger of bad news. A new study provides the strongest evidence yet that quakes can trigger volcanic activity. Knowledge about how and why such events occur could help predict impending eruptions, warn populations, and potentially save thousands of lives.
Both earthquakes and volcanoes arise from deep within Earth's surface. Quakes are caused by collisions between tectonic plates floating on Earth's mantle, which is home to the lava that volcanoes spew. It's perhaps not surprising then that the two geological events could be linked. Indeed, several events over the past century have provided fodder for the theory. In 1975, for example, Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano erupted less than an hour after an earthquake struck a few kilometres away. Similarly, Chile's Cordon Caulle volcano blew its top 2 days after a major earthquake that was centred 240 kilometres away.
Still, there was no direct scientific evidence that quakes spark volcanoes.

Indonesia's mount Merapi spewed out lavas streams stretching over a maximum distance of 1.5 km toward Gendol River, on the volcano's southern slope, on Friday According to Panut, an officer at the Kaliurang observation post, Sleman District, Yogyakarta Province.
In the first six hours of Friday, Mount Merapi produced a total of 32 lavas streams, and 47 streams during Thursday morning.
Under the current "alert" status, the 2,965-meter-high volcano is off-limits to hikers, farmers and sand miners within a radius of six kilometres from the top, and 300 meters from the banks of the Krasak, Boyong, Sat and Gendol rivers.
