Uzbek scientists claim that Dry Lake is ancient meteorite impact zone

"More than 20 years ago the shots of the surface of Ustyurt plateau made from space revealed an oval shaped structure in Kungrad district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan (140km south-east of Shahpahta Village), which corresponds to the geographical object known as Dry Lake. Based on the data available today, the researchers have concluded that this is most definitely a crater left by a meteorite" - Alexey Gluh, specialist at the Institute of Mineral Resources under the State Geology Committee of Uzbekistan.

According to Gluh, the meteorite came from the north-west and hit the ground in the south-east of Ustyurt plateau, approximately 50,000 years ago. The impact created a ridge, and the meteorite itself went deep below the earth surface.

"We studied the area visually from the helicopter. We are now applying other examination methods" - Alexey Gluh.
The scientist added that in 1999 Dry Lake was included in the list of geological monuments of Uzbekistan.

Uzbek geologists have found a large meteorite crater located in the unpopulated Ust-Yurt deserted plateau, located in the north-western part of Uzbekistan.

State Committee for Geology and Mineral Resources of Uzbekistan said the collision was so powerful it created an 7 km wide by 10 km long elliptical cavity. The depth of the crater is about 40 meters. As a result of the impact a ridge 60 meters high and 1 km long formed in the south-eastern end of the plateau.

According to preliminary information, the meteorite impact happened approximately 11 million years ago.

Uzbekistan's Ustyurt plateau is located between the Aral Sea and the Caspian Sea, and rises to between 150-300 metres high. The area was used by the Soviets as a testing ground for anti-chemical weapons experiments.
